Mike Flanagan and Jordan Peele have been leading the way in this genre, and although that’s what I’m drawn to, there’s something to be said about horror movies that are more on the lighter side. These are the kind of movies that aren’t too terrifying, but can still give you nightmares at a slumber party. The kills in Tarot are creative, but they’re mostly shown off-screen. After all, the movie is only rated PG-13, and it feels like it would be closer to a PG rating if it was based solely on gore. However, some of the characters from the tarot cards that come to life are quite eerie. For experienced horror fans, Tarot won’t keep them up at night, but for those new to the genre, it’s a great introduction. A group of friends at a party turn to tarot cards to pass the time, but little do they know that a curse will soon start fulfilling deadly prophecies for each of them. With the help of an old woman who faced a similar fate and the Internet, the remaining partygoers must uncover the dark forces behind the deaths.
