While bedding is an element we always remember to clean, decorative pillows often need attention. Proper care of textile accessories extends their life and guarantees the whole apartment’s neat and cosy appearance! How do you wash decorative pillows? This is precisely what the following post is about – we encourage you to read it.
Sofa and decorative pillows – how often to wash?
Sofa cushions are very often an element included in the set. Perfectly matched to the seat, they complement the piece of furniture and guarantee an aesthetic experience. Cleaning such accessories is accessible only when the cover is removed. However, cleaning their surface is more complicated if our pillows need to be equipped with a lock. Since textile accessories of this type should be washed at least once every two months (optimally once a month), it is worth buying pillowcases or decorative pillows to make your life easier. Depending on the variant, the fabric can cover selected cushions or permanently replace them with models equipped with zippers or buttons. Refreshing such additions requires much less effort from us!
Rules for washing decorative pillowcases
Washing pillowcases is a relatively simple task. After removing the filling, let’s look at the label with the vital washing information. If we cannot find this type of data, the composition of the material is also a good clue. Cotton pillowcases are the least problematic in terms of cleaning. The water temperature can reach 60 degrees Celsius, but only for light and one-color models. If our decoration is characterized by patterns or intense colour, it is worth using a program with cool water (up to 40 degrees Celsius) for washing. Pillowcases enriched with details, such as beads, lace and other sensitive accents, are better cleaned by hand. The same principle applies to a fluffy pillowcase whose long-haired surface requires special care. However, if you do not have time for hand washing, textile accessories of this type can be cleaned occasionally in the washing machine. However, before putting them in the machine’s drum, turn the surface inside out and place it in special nets designed for washing delicate additives. This will make them much less likely to be damaged.
Washing pillows depending on the filling
Pillows from which we cannot remove the cover should be washed in a way adapted to the type of filling.
The lowest temperature is required for pillows with latex filling. To refresh them, we prepare a solution of cold water with half a glass of vinegar. Add a few drops of your favourite essential oil to improve the fragrance. In such a solution, the pillow can be left for several hours.
We also soak feather pillows in cool or lukewarm water. Add the juice of one lemon and a tablespoon of salt to a bowl with plenty of water. After thorough mixing, we soak our textile decoration in the resulting solution.
Synthetic fillings are the least demanding. Thanks to their surprising durability, they can be washed well in a washing machine – in cold water with 1/3 cup of vinegar.
The pillows refreshed in this way are best dried in the open air. It is, therefore, worth planning the cleaning of accessories for warm and sunny days – in such conditions, the fabric with filling dries quickly and easily.
